Day 9: The Day of Rest

Howdy, everyone! This is Courtney and Bradley authoring the blog today - see how today turned out to be a pretty restful day for us!

We began today by touring the Museum of Islamic Art. This museum is filled with Islamic Art that has been acquired from all over the world. The museum is a beautiful building design by I. M. Pei (who designed the Louvre) and looks out across the water to West Bay, an area in Qatar that we would classify as a “downtown.” In the museum there were multiple manuscripts of the Quran, with one being one of the only blue manuscripts of the Quran in the world. The museum also holds beautiful jewels and rugs that have been previously owned by emperors and royal rulers.

The tour lasted about an hour, and afterwards we had the rest of the day to choose our own adventure. The group Bradley was with went back to Souq Waqif to where the original shawarma was started. (A shawarma is kind of like a wrap with either chicken or beef, and sometimes can be served with sauces or fries in the wrap). The group Courtney was with went to pick up some free items for serving as a volunteer for the World Cup. From there, we all kind of did our own thing.

One thing Courtney and Bradley have in common is they both have Type I Diabetes, so being in a different country with a chronic illness always adds an extra layer to the experience. We both agree that we have to be extra careful with what we bring with us when we travel around town, what we should or should not eat, and being aware of how mush work we are putting on our bodies. We both have managed it throughout this trip, and are fortunate to be able to still travel with our chronic illness, but there are still sometimes an issue may arise that we have to be prepared to be adaptive. For example, Bradley uses a pump, and there have been multiple checkpoints where he has to be patted down while going through a security checkpoint into stadiums or the Fan Fest, and a few of those times the security was not aware of how to handle it. So, it will always be a process, but one we can handle!

Thanks for reading, and stayed tune for the next few days as we began to wrap up our trip!
